Bayonne Stop & Shop Worker Punched Twice Trying To Stop Fleeing Thieves , Police Say

A Bayonne Stop & Shop employee trying to stop a couple from fleeing with more than $350 in merchandise was punched twice by one of the thieves, authorities said.

The Lefante Way grocery store employee noticed several rejected credit card transaction made by a man and woman in self-checkout last Thursday, Bayonne Police Lt. Eric Amato told NJ.com.

The man and woman were on their way out of the store with the unpaid goods around 9:20 p.m., police said.

The worker approached them in an attempt to keep them from leaving and was subsequently punched in the face and back by the female thief -- who then fled with the man, police said.

It was not clear if anyone was in custody.
